Dear Parents, Colleagues and Students

Re: The Government’s proposals for the partial reopening of schools

You will no doubt be aware that the Prime Minister has proposed a partial re-opening of schools, for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 from June 1st, alongside priority groups; and ‘some face to face support to supplement the remote education of Year 10 and Year 12 students’. I stress the word ‘from’ as, in the event of wider access, it will be necessary for schools to close to pupils and engage staff in training and planning in the first couple of days of the month.

Our first concern remains the health, safety and well-being of our staff and students and we will now work with our Headteachers and Governors to respond to DfE guidelines, consider what is feasible and create a risk assessment and mitigation plan. The plan, including a section of frequently asked questions, will be considered by Trustees and published next week. Our Heads and Governors will adopt and amend this policy to reflect their context and capacity. Headteachers are meeting with their leadership teams this week and will write to you shortly with their initial response to the proposals.

The initial guidance contains severe restrictions and it is clear that we cannot return to anything like ‘normal’ school.  The Prime Minister also made it clear that the current proposals may be abandoned if the relevant data causes concern. We are expecting further guidance later in the week.

I know you will be keen to understand what this means and how our response will affect you. May I ask for your patience and understanding as we seek clarification on several key matters and confirm our response to the challenges ahead?

I can reassure you that we will maintain our support for home schooling throughout the next period of the national emergency and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff who have provided support and the many parents and students who have provided very positive feedback to date.

We will now consider the measures required to meet the guidelines and concerns. Headteachers will confirm their initial thoughts for partial and phased return for nominated groups as soon as possible.

With thanks for your understanding. Links to the DfE guidance are noted below.

Yours sincerely,
P W Rubery
